The National Science Foundation (NSF) Accountable Institutions and Behavior (AIB) and Security and Preparedness (SAP) programs fund an array of political science research on citizenship, government, and politics, including in subfields such as American government and politics, comparative government and politics, international relations, political behavior, political economy, and political institutions. In addition, the programs have supported undergraduate research and methodological innovations in the field. The NSF also funds multidisciplinary research projects. These research areas were previously covered under the Political Science (PS) program. 

FY23 NSF Appropriations

The Presidential budget request proposes $10.5 billion for the National Science Foundation, a $2 billion or 24-percent increase from FY22. These increased levels include $1.6 billion for climate research and development, $880 million for the Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships to expand technology development in emerging areas, $393 million for programs to increase participation of underrepresented communities in science and engineering, and $2 billion for research infrastructure at NSF.
